Horrible road conditions in south Florida. I95 in the downtown area floods badly. This is not a new condition (experienced it for the last 20+ years); it is normal situation for I95 drivers. I have attached pictures as evidence of last Saturday July 29, 2017 (just in case state authorities lock at these reviews and want to do something about it). The pictures show the maintenance crew pumping water from the highway to clear the north bound left lane approaching the W836 ramp. The other picture shows the water in the left lane not at its usual level but to give the idea. The entire left lane and part of the second from the left lane are usually under water when it rains, keep in mind this is an elevated highway, no reason for flooding other than poor or no maintenance.
The lighting maintenance in I95 is also very bad in the downtown area. There are several lamps off at any given time. Very often entire rows of lamps are off for several days and even weeks. There is a glass lens in one lamp in the ramp to W836 that is hanging dangerously, probably because the maintenance crew did not properly close them (at least 4 months in this condition). There is another lamp with the same issue on the main travel lanes just before the SR836.
I don’t know who came up with the express lanes on I95, they do not help traffic at all. A few years ago, the days before erecting the divider poles to make the express lanes and after removing the signs for the unused HOV lane, the traffic on I95 was flowing very nicely. But then the poles came, traffic got worse than before.
The FDOT is good at manipulating statistics. According to I95 express, the speed at rush hour on the regular travel lanes on I95 increased by 20miles/hour at rush hour, you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to see that that is not true. Let’s do simple math, assume the speed at rush hour was 0 miles/hour, the claimed increase in speed will get you moving at 20miles/hour, the distance from downtown Miami to the Golden Glades is ~10 miles, so it will take a driver 30 minutes to travel that distance. If you are an I95 commuter you know it usually takes close to 1 hour.
When I’m looking for directions that use I95, Google maps estimates quite often that it is faster to travel on regular I95 than on I95 express lanes.
We are in desperate need for better road and traffic conditions. We also need the FDOT officials to get out of their desks and do their jobs, at the end your salary is coming from our taxes.

If you get in an accident on I-95 downtown Miami area, consider it was the FDOT fault for not maintaining the 60year old road.

I’ve traveled all over the country, and south Florida has the worst highway and road network. Its filthy with weeds, trash and even small trees growing on the hard shoulders and retaining walls. The amount of debris on the roads is startling. If that weren’t enough, almost every highway is a toll road with DANGEROUS express lanes crammed in an already congested network. There is NO hard shoulder for most of the express lanes in Dade county. If you run out of fuel or get a flat tire in the express lanes have your last will and testament in order, you might not be coming back home since there is no safe place to turn off. You’d think I’m exaggerating, I wish that were the case. You can look up the collisions and fatalities for yourself. Pepper in “lane divers” or drivers that intentionally drive over the plastic poles to get out of traffic jams where they were going 5pm to join traffic going 60-70… I don’t have to tell you what happens next. Worst roads in the U.S. Welcome to Miami.
